A useful fit for

A standard full-size crib configuration with a manufacturer-listed width of 31 inches, an included toddler conversion kit and a separately sold M5789 path to a full-size bed, for a household that checks the crib footprint, required access space and separate mattress/rail needs.

The main tradeoff

The M12901 documents no bassinet or midi configuration and no wheels in any reviewed mode. The full-size crib mattress is separate, and the advertised full-size bed requires M5789 rails; manufacturer claims and a name-only recall screen are not independent verification.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the full-size Gelato M12901 provide a bassinet or midi crib starting arrangement?

No. Both current M12901 listings link the same manual for the full-size Gelato crib, toddler-bed and daybed arrangements; neither documents bassinet or midi dimensions, hardware or a smaller sleep surface. Do not merge the separate Gelato M12998 mini crib into this M12901 assessment.

How much width should be reserved for the M12901 full-size crib?

Babyletto lists a 31-inch assembled width for the full-size M12901. It therefore passes a 31-inch maximum product-width comparison but fails a 30.5-inch maximum. Neither number includes room for caregiver access, nearby furniture, delivery or conversion work.

Does the standard Gelato M12901 listing include a full-size crib mattress?

The reviewed Babyletto M12901 product data lists the full-size mattress as a separate add-on rather than part of the crib package. Its manual requires a mattress at least 51 5/8 by 27 1/4 inches, no thicker than 6 inches, with no more than a 3 cm gap at the side when pushed firmly. Confirm the exact retailer bundle and physical fit.

What do the four Gelato M12901 configurations actually require?

The base listing documents full-size crib, toddler-bed and daybed configurations with a toddler kit included. The fourth, full-size-bed configuration uses the separately sold M5789 rails; the crib mattress is not included in the base package, and the bed setup has separate mattress/box-spring checks. All stages are sequential rather than simultaneous.

Are wheels documented for a Gelato M12901 setup?

The reviewed full-size M12901 listings and linked manual do not document wheels for the crib, toddler bed, daybed or M5789 full-size bed. Do not infer mobile use from another Gelato model or a product photo.

Research-based assessment, not a hands-on test. Babyletto's current Gelato M12901 listings describe a full-size crib with an included toddler conversion kit and a separate route to a full-size bed. The case for it is a familiar full-size crib first, with a documented way to change the frame later. The important boundary is the package: the optional bed rails and full-size crib mattress are not part of the ordinary crib configuration reviewed here.

One M12901 family, seven finish SKUs

The main Babyletto product record contains M12901NLGLD (Natural Walnut & Gold Feet), M12901WNX (White/Washed Natural), M12901NXW (Washed Natural / White), M12901HYVTL (Honey with Vegan Tan Leather Feet) and M12901FRGRBE (Forest Green with Vegan Blonde Leather Feet). Its separate retail-exclusive record adds M12901CVB (Cove Blue) and M12901WP (Washed Pine). Both records identify M12901, link the same instruction manual and repeat the same three base configurations and assembled dimensions. I found no functional difference between finish or channel records, so this review treats them as finish variants of one crib family. Match the full SKU suffix to the offer instead of relying on a color name.

This is the full-size crib model, not the similarly named Gelato M12998 4-in-1 convertible mini crib. The M12998 is a distinct smaller product with its own identity and sleep surface; its data cannot fill gaps in this M12901 assessment.

Count the real setup path and its separate kit

Babyletto describes a full-size crib, toddler bed and daybed and says the toddler-bed conversion kit is included. Its M12901 booklet shows the crib, toddler and daybed sequences, all of which are successive arrangements of the same frame rather than beds used at once. The copy also describes an optional full-size bed conversion. The manual tells the owner to retain the side panel, names M5789 for the later conversion, and the manufacturer's M5789 kit record identifies wooden rails for converting a full-size crib into a full-size bed. That kit is a separate product. The kit page calls it rails; budget for the appropriate bed mattress and box spring separately and verify the exact finish and compatibility before ordering.

Measure the final crib, not just the nursery-stage setup

Babyletto lists the assembled M12901 at 55 inches long, 31 inches wide and 35.25 inches high, with a 52-by-28-inch interior and an assembled frame weight of 46.29 pounds. Its product record also lists 135-pound slat strength and a 50-pound maximum. Slat strength describes the manufacturer's slat figure; it is not an occupant limit. The general 50-pound listing does not assign a separate maximum to each setup.

Treat that 31-inch outside width as product footprint, not clearance: include access, nearby furniture, delivery route and conversion workspace. It matches the Pogo and Swell listings and is 1.25 inches wider than the Lolly; these comparisons cannot establish whether your room or doorway fits.

Match the mattress to the crib manual

Babyletto presents the full-size crib mattress as a separate add-on, not as included in the standard M12901 crib package. The manufacturer recommends a 52-by-27.75-inch mattress; its M12901 manual requires at least 51 5/8 by 27 1/4 inches, no thicker than 6 inches, with a gap no greater than 3 cm when the mattress is pushed firmly against any side. Confirm the exact manual version and measure the actual sleep surface. A label saying "standard full-size" alone does not establish that a specific mattress meets those limits.

Keep warnings attached to the right mode

For crib use, the M12901 manual says to lower the mattress when a child can pull to standing and stop using the crib when the child starts to climb out or reaches 35 inches. It also says not to use damaged, broken or incomplete parts. A later warning in the booklet gives a 15-month minimum and 50-pound maximum for “this bed”; it appears after the daybed-conversion instructions but does not separately name every later bed configuration. Do not transfer that warning to crib mode or treat this research note as a substitute for the warning on the exact crib and kit.

Babyletto describes New Zealand pine and advertises GREENGUARD Gold; those are manufacturer statements, not an independent materials audit or emissions test here. No certification lookup, physical inspection, assembly trial, strength measurement or durability testing was performed. The CPSC's model-name recall API searches for M12901 and Gelato returned empty lists in this review cycle, but a keyword screen cannot clear a lot or a secondhand unit.

Who should compare it—and what to verify

The M12901 merits a shortlist when a household wants a full-size crib from the start, an included toddler rail, and the option to buy a separately identified M5789 kit for a full-size bed later. It is not supported by the reviewed evidence as a bassinet or midi crib, and no wheels are documented for its crib, toddler, daybed or full-size-bed modes. It also fails a strict 30.5-inch product-width ceiling and does not meet an essential included-mattress requirement in the manufacturer's base package.

Before purchase, check the M12901 model and finish SKU, whether the offer is the base crib or a retailer bundle, and whether the toddler rail is in that exact box. If the future full-size bed matters, confirm the correct M5789 finish, complete rails and the separate mattress/box spring requirements. For open-box or used furniture, compare its model label and every part against the matching instructions; this assessment did not establish package contents for any particular retailer or secondhand unit.
