Babyletto Gelato 4-in-1 Convertible Mini Crib review

A 26-inch-wide listed mini crib with a model-specific mini sleep surface; its toddler rail and later twin-bed rails are separate kits, and it does not become a full-size crib.

A useful fit for

A compact mini-crib arrangement with a listed 26-inch outside width, for a household that needs the M12998 mini sleep surface and checks the exact pad, mattress and room clearances.

The main tradeoff

The M12998 is not a bassinet or a full-size crib; it has no documented wheels, and Babyletto identifies its toddler-rail and later twin-bed kits as separate purchases. A mini sleep surface and a future twin bed are not interchangeable with a full-size crib and mattress.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is the Gelato M12998 a bassinet configuration?

No. Babyletto identifies the M12998 as a mini crib; the manufacturer record and instructions do not document a bassinet configuration. Its compact crib footprint should not be treated as a bassinet stage.

Does the M12998 include a later full-size crib stage?

No. The M12998 manual and current page show a mini crib, mini toddler bed, mini daybed and twin-bed route; its later bed is not a full-size crib. It therefore does not meet a requirement for a full-size crib stage later.

How wide is the listed mini crib?

Babyletto lists the assembled M12998 at 26 inches wide. It passes a 26-inch maximum mini-crib width answer and fails 25.5 inches; that is the product's outside width, not the clearance needed around it.

Are the toddler rail and twin-bed rails part of the basic M12998 package?

The toddler conversion uses a separately sold M12999 rail, and the twin-bed route uses separately sold M5789 rails. Match the rail finish and crib model and check the exact box; the product's four-configuration label does not mean all conversion rails are included.

What sleep surface fits the mini crib?

The product page identifies an included 1.5-inch waterproof pad and recommends a separate mini mattress, while the manual says to use only the manufacturer-provided mattress/pad, at least 36.75 by 23.25 inches and no thicker than 5 inches, with no side gap over 1 inch. Check the exact package and manual rather than adding layers or assuming a mattress is included.

Can the M12998 be rolled between rooms?

Babyletto's current product FAQ says the Gelato Mini does not come with wheels and is designed as a stationary crib; no reviewed conversion plan documents wheels. Decorative interchangeable feet are not caster wheels.

Research-based desk assessment, not a hands-on test. The Babyletto Gelato M12998 is a real mini crib, not the small-size mode of the full-size M12901 Gelato. Its attraction is a listed 26-inch outside width and an eventual set of distinct reconfigurations; its drawback is that neither a bassinet arrangement nor a full-size crib stage is documented, and the conversion hardware is not all in the base crib package.

Confirm the model before comparing the name

Babyletto's current product record identifies model M12998, product ID 4735494619190, and four finish SKUs: Natural Walnut & Gold Feet M12998NLGLD, White/Washed Natural M12998WNX, Washed Natural / White M12998NXW, and Honey with Vegan Tan Leather Feet M12998HYVTL. The record and current instructions support one mini-crib family across those finish variants. Match the complete suffix on the offer and the unit label; a similar color name alone does not establish which crib or conversion rail is present.

This is separate from Babyletto's full-size Gelato M12901. The M12998 has its own product identity and manual, a mini sleep surface and a different assembled footprint. Calling it “mini” does not make it a bassinet, and converting it later to a twin bed does not give it a full-size crib stage.

Put the listed footprint in the room plan

Babyletto lists the M12998 at 39.75 inches long, 26 inches wide and 35 inches high, with an interior crib area of 37 by 24 inches and a listed assembled weight of 37 pounds. That gives a specific product-width boundary for a mini crib: it passes a 26-inch maximum and does not pass 25.5 inches. The dimension is the assembled product, not the space a caregiver needs to reach the crib, nearby furniture clearance, delivery route or working room while converting it. Measure your actual route and room separately rather than treating the nominal mini footprint as a fit guarantee.

Read the four arrangements as separate configurations

The current product page calls this a 4-in-1 system. The manual's cover describes a mini crib and twin bed, while its pages also illustrate toddler-bed and daybed arrangements. The useful distinction is what hardware each mode needs: toddler mode uses a separate M12999 rail and reuses the mini sleep surface; the illustrated daybed removes a panel. Twin-bed mode uses separately sold M5789 rails, with its mattress and box spring bought separately. Use the M12998 manual for each assembly.

These are alternative, sequential arrangements. Match the model and finish to the current manual and exact rail kit; a similarly named Gelato rail may not fit, especially with an older crib or loose accessory.

Separate the waterproof pad from mattress assumptions

The current product page describes a 1.5-inch waterproof mini-crib pad as included and shows a mini mattress as a separate add-on. Its M12998 manual says to use only the manufacturer-provided mattress/pad, at least 36.75 by 23.25 inches and no more than 5 inches thick; it also warns against a side gap larger than 1 inch. Babyletto recommends a 37-by-23.5-inch mini mattress on the listing, but that does not establish what a particular retailer bundle contains. Check the exact box and the current M12998 warning before using a sleep surface. Do not add padding or assume a standard full-size mattress can substitute for the mini surface.

The manual says to lower the support when a child can pull to standing and stop crib use once the child can climb out or reaches 35 inches. The current product page lists a general 45-pound maximum but does not assign that number to each configuration, so I do not transfer it to the toddler, daybed or twin-bed setup. Follow the instructions and warning label for the exact arrangement.

Stationary mini crib, not a mobile bassinet

Babyletto's current FAQ says the Gelato Mini does not come with wheels and is designed as a stationary crib. Its interchangeable feet are styling parts, not casters. The M12998 record and reviewed instructions do not establish wheels in any later arrangement either, so this is not a supported choice when rolling the sleep space is essential. The manufacturer describes New Zealand pine and advertises GREENGUARD Gold; these are manufacturer claims, not an independent material inspection or emissions test in this assessment.

Who should shortlist it

The M12998 is worth comparing when a household specifically wants a mini crib and its 26-inch listed width is within the measured product-width limit. It is a poor match for an essential bassinet start, a midi crib, a later full-size crib, a full-size crib mattress included in the package, or manufacturer-documented wheels. The mini-size toddler rail and twin-bed rail path also make the exact supplied parts more important than the “4-in-1” headline suggests. If a full-size crib is needed later, compare a distinct full-size system such as the Gelato M12901 rather than treating this model's twin conversion as equivalent.

For any offer, confirm the exact M12998 finish and which sleep-surface or rail parts it includes. Check open-box or used parts against the matching instructions; this assessment did not establish the contents of a specific seller package.

A CPSC M12998 name-query returned no entries in the checked dataset, which does not clear any lot or secondhand unit. No assembly, use, testing, physical measurement, certification verification, price, stock or customer-experience claim is made.
