Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
How wide is the Kalani full-size crib?
The manufacturer lists the M5501 crib at 35 inches wide, 54.5 inches long and 42 inches high. This is the assembled product dimension only; measure access and room clearance separately.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the Kalani order include its toddler-bed conversion kit?
No. The product page lists the M3099 toddler-bed kit as sold separately. Check the exact kit and manual before planning this transition.
Explore this need in the finder →Does the Kalani include full-size bed conversion rails?
No. The manufacturer lists the M4799 full-size conversion rails as separate; its instructions call them recommended for the full-size bed setup. That later bed is a different arrangement from the full-size crib.
Explore this need in the finder →What crib mattress measurements does Kalani's manual require?
The M5501 manual calls for a crib mattress at least 51 5/8 by 27 1/4 inches, no thicker than 6 inches, and sized so the gap to the side is no more than 3 centimeters when pushed against a side. It also says to lower the support when a child can pull to standing and stop using the crib if the child climbs out or is 35 inches tall.
Explore this need in the finder →This source-based review covers DaVinci's Kalani M5501 product page, finish variants, and linked assembly/conversion manual. It was not assembled or physically measured for this assessment. The central buying distinction is that Kalani documents more than a crib-only use path—including an adult full-size bed arrangement—but its listed crib width is 35 inches and the conversion hardware is not all part of the base crib item. Buyers should weigh those tradeoffs before reading “4-in-1” as a complete all-stage carton.
Start with the footprint
DaVinci lists the M5501 crib at 54.5 inches long, 35 inches wide, and 42 inches high, with an assembled weight of 56 pounds. The interior crib dimension is 52 by 28 inches. The 35-inch outside width is the important room-planning figure: Kalani is 4.5 inches wider than Lainey Bobbins M33201 and 5.25 inches wider than Marley W4901 in the same researched group. It does not pass a 30-, 30.5-, 31-, or 32-inch product-width ceiling; the next useful half-inch boundary for this model is 35 inches.
That width comparison is not a verdict on whether Kalani will fit a home. Measure the room, doorway and route, adjacent furniture, and workspace for conversion separately. A crib that clears a width limit by its bare frame dimension can still be impractical if a caregiver cannot reach it or if the later reconfiguration has no safe work area.
Four named arrangements, two distinct kit decisions
The product page describes crib, toddler bed, daybed, and full-size bed arrangements. Those names span two different jobs: a full-size crib is the infant crib setup, while an adult full-size bed is a later furniture configuration. One does not prove the other. The family is not a mini crib, bassinet, or midi crib in the reviewed manufacturer material.
DaVinci identifies the M3099 Toddler Bed Conversion Kit and the M4799 Twin/Full-Size Bed Conversion Kit as separate items. The M5501 manual likewise has a toddler-kit section and says the M4799 rails are recommended for the full-size bed conversion. Check those exact kit IDs and whether a seller is actually including them. A large stage count does not settle what hardware is in an order or what may be missing from a used crib.
The toddler-bed conversion instructions state that the child must be at least 15 months old and weigh no more than 50 pounds. The manual says crib use should end if a child starts climbing out or reaches 35 inches; lower the support when a child can pull to standing. Use the warnings for the particular configuration and the exact manual. The listing names a daybed, but the page alone does not establish which parts are included for that arrangement.
Mattress and assembly checks
For the crib, the M5501 manual specifies a standard full-size crib mattress at least 51 5/8 inches long and 27 1/4 inches wide, no more than 6 inches thick, with the side gap no greater than 3 centimeters when pushed against a side. A mattress displayed in manufacturer photography is not proof of inclusion. The M5501 base listing is the crib, and the page presents mattress selection as an add-on or bundle option, so verify the actual package and its mattress separately.
The manual's introductory assembly note says two people are needed. It also advises using the supplied hardware as instructed rather than substituting parts or using power screwdrivers. That makes the assembly plan and complete hardware set part of the purchase decision, especially for an open-box or secondhand unit. The manual carries a June 2020 revision date; compare the physical booklet and hardware to the current product information instead of assuming that every old carton is complete.
Material and certification language
DaVinci describes Kalani as made from solid New Zealand pine and makes a GREENGUARD Gold certification claim on its product page. The product page also gives Taiwan as country of origin; that is distinct from the wood-origin claim. These statements are attributed to the manufacturer, not independently verified by this review. I did not test the coating, emissions, assembly, stability, mattress fit, durability, or long-term performance.
Who should compare Kalani?
Kalani makes the most sense in this three-model group when a full-size crib is needed now, there is space for its 35-inch listed width, and an eventual adult full-size bed path is a meaningful goal. It is not the compact choice: Marley and Lainey offer materially narrower documented footprints. It is also a poor fit for a buyer who needs every future conversion component in the crib carton or wants an included standard mattress without confirming a bundle.
Before purchase, match the M5501 model and finish suffix—Chestnut M5501CT, Espresso M5501Q, Grey M5501G, or White M5501W—and compare the seller's actual package with the M5501 manual. Ask specifically about the crib mattress, M3099 toddler kit, M4799 full-bed rails, instructions, and all hardware. Then plan the full footprint and route, not just the catalog dimensions. The manufacturer image shown here is Chestnut M5501CT in crib mode and does not certify the contents of any particular seller's offer.
