Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the M27901 include an infant bassinet or intermediate midi crib?
Babyletto's M27901 page and crib manual describe a standard full-size crib with toddler-bed and daybed changes; they do not document a bassinet or midi arrangement. If one of those earlier or smaller setups is essential, compare a model whose exact package and manual establish it.
Explore this need in the finder →What does the Swell's advertised four-stage conversion actually include?
The crib package includes the toddler-bed rail and supports the daybed arrangement. The fourth, full-size-bed arrangement needs the separate M5789 bed-rail kit; its mattress and box spring are separate too. Those are different assembled forms, not four modes available at once.
Explore this need in the finder →Will the full-size crib fit a room with a 31-inch width limit?
The manufacturer lists the full-size crib at 31 inches wide. That meets a 31-inch product-width ceiling exactly, but it leaves no allowance for access or nearby furniture, so measure the installation space rather than treating the listed footprint as the entire room requirement.
Explore this need in the finder →Is the standard full-size crib mattress included?
No. The M27901 instructions require a full-size crib mattress at least 51 5/8 inches long by 27 1/4 inches wide and no more than 6 inches thick. Check mattress fit and firmness requirements against the current manual; the optional full-bed kit uses a separate full-size mattress and box spring.
Explore this need in the finder →The Swell M27901 is a standard-size crib with a toddler rail in the base package, not an all-stages sleep system. Babyletto describes four arrangements, but the fourth—full-size bed—requires a separately sold M5789 conversion kit. This is a source-based assessment, not a hands-on review.
Separate the included rail from the optional bed kit
The main listing names Honey (M27901HY), Cove Blue (M27901CVB), Light Sage (M27901LS), Natural Walnut (M27901NL), White (M27901W), Pale Yellow (M27901PY) and Blonde (M27901BD); a separate retail-exclusive page lists Washed Pine (M27901WP). Both pages cite the M27901 manual and present the same dimensions and conversion path. The retailer-only listing adds a finish and channel, not a distinct mechanism; this review covers all eight finish SKUs as one family.
The base path is full-size crib, toddler bed and daybed, with the toddler conversion rail listed as included. The full-size bed arrangement is different: Babyletto says it requires the M5789 twin/full-size bed rails, which are an additional purchase. That kit's product page also says the full-size bed mattress and box spring are separate. Count the pieces as carefully as the four-stage name. The crib carton does not, by that name alone, include all the parts for a finished full-size bed.
Plan around the full-size crib footprint
Babyletto lists the assembled crib at 54.75 inches long, 31 wide and 35.75 high, with a 52-by-28-inch interior. Assembled weight is 44.6 pounds; the front rail-to-floor measure is 31 inches. The company calls the design low-profile, but that does not guarantee access for a particular caregiver. Sketch the outer footprint, include the room route and leave clearance to stand and convert the frame.
The product page calls the M27901 a standard-size crib. The manual sets the controlling mattress checks: at least 51 5/8 inches long by 27 1/4 inches wide, with thickness no greater than 6 inches. It also warns against a gap greater than 3 centimeters when the mattress is pushed firmly against a side. The full-size crib mattress is not included. Compare those instructions with the actual mattress label and fit; the interior frame dimensions are not permission to choose a different-sized or overly thick sleep surface.
Expect reassembly, not a growing frame
Four mattress-support positions let the crib be set lower as a child grows; the M27901 manual says to use the lowest position once the child can pull to standing. It calls for ending crib use when the child begins to climb out or reaches 35 inches in height. Those are practical, model-specific stop points to keep with the instruction booklet. The product page also displays a 50-pound maximum weight but does not identify which configuration that number belongs to, so I do not treat it as a universal cutoff for the crib, toddler bed and optional full-size bed.
The instructions and product page document a full-size crib, toddler bed and daybed; they do not establish a bassinet or midi crib setup. That is the biggest functional difference from the Babyletto All-Stages systems in this research library, which document an early bassinet arrangement and, depending on the exact model/package, may include or separately sell midi components. If you need a compact first-stage sleep setup or a narrower intermediate crib, the Swell does not satisfy that need on the reviewed evidence. Its strengths are narrower: a conventional full-size crib footprint, four height settings, and an included rail for a later toddler-bed arrangement.
Materials and certification are manufacturer claims
Babyletto describes sustainably sourced solid New Zealand pine and claims FSC and GREENGUARD Gold certifications. Those are manufacturer statements, not independent findings here. The wave-shaped rails and range of finishes are aesthetic choices; the 31-inch width is the more concrete room-fit check.
Who should shortlist the Swell?
The M27901 may fit a household that wants a standard full-size crib now, expects to use the included toddler rail later, and is comfortable treating a full-size bed as an optional future project with extra parts and bedding. It is a poor match if bassinet or midi use is essential, the room cannot accommodate a 31-inch-wide crib, or a complete full-size-bed package must come in the initial order. It is also not a way to avoid buying a full-size crib mattress.
Before ordering, check the label for M27901 and the exact finish suffix, confirm whether the offer is the main listing or Washed Pine retail-exclusive, and compare the carton contents with the current manual. If the full-size bed stage matters, verify the M5789 rail finish and instructions as well as the separate mattress and box spring. The crib manual lists the measurements and stop conditions, while the M5789 instructions say to refer back to the crib manual for the exact conversion procedure. A keyword search of CPSC's recall API for Swell and M27901 returned no entries; the broader Babyletto query surfaced a separate Kiwi electronic-glider recall, not this crib. Search results are not proof that a particular used unit or production lot is clear, so inspect its label and check current recall information.
